mythtv
so i've been playing with mythtv today, and it looks like it may replace freevo as my dvr of choice, but not for a while since it requires a better pc than i have right now. it also will let me have a backend server that does all the recording, with lots of hard drive space, and multiple capture cards, and multiple frontend boxes that can all view tv and video. it also supports time shifting(tv pause). the problems i have with it are that it is significantly slower than freevo/tvtime, i haven't gotten the audio working with it, and it locks up my machine(which is in a known dying condition), but i do plan on purchasing a new computer in feb, which should allow me to get it working nicely. i want to get everything up and running so that when mike asks me to help him set up a dvr i will be able to get everything set up correctly and quickly.
oh and mike has las vegas bowl pictures up now

Posted by: dan on December 28, 2003 10:43 AMWhat kind of pc are you using mythtv on?
I've been seriously considering installing it on my RedHat box, but it seems to me like it might be a little more trouble than it is worth.
i'm using an athlon 1ghz w/ 512mb ram, running redhat 9.0. i'm using an ati tvwonder (not ve).
if you use apt to get it, and set up

in apt, it's really easy to get mythtv. just:
apt-get install mythtv-suite
you need to have mysql up and running, but that's about it. i was actually suprised since i'd heard all these horror stories about myth, but it wasn't too bad. of course i still haven't gotten audio to play yet, but i think that's because i haven't gotten the metadata.sql part set up in the database. the tv part works fine, or would if my computer wasn't dying, which causes it to crash after 1-5 minutes of tv watching. for some reason tvtime doesn't cause this, but tvtime isn't recording the video all the time like myth is. i think my computer locks up because my mb overheats when it's being stressed.
Posted by: dan on December 29, 2003 07:47 AMmaybe those horror stories you heard were just myths. muhaha. muhahahaha. MUUHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA.
