mythtv

so i've been playing with mythtv today, and it looks like it may replace freevo as my dvr of choice, but not for a while since it requires a better pc than i have right now. it also will let me have a backend server that does all the recording, with lots of hard drive space, and multiple capture cards, and multiple frontend boxes that can all view tv and video. it also supports time shifting(tv pause). the problems i have with it are that it is significantly slower than freevo/tvtime, i haven't gotten the audio working with it, and it locks up my machine(which is in a known dying condition), but i do plan on purchasing a new computer in feb, which should allow me to get it working nicely. i want to get everything up and running so that when mike asks me to help him set up a dvr i will be able to get everything set up correctly and quickly.

oh and mike has las vegas bowl pictures up now

wasting time on xmas

so i've decided to actually get accomplished things that have been on my palm pilot todo list for years, so i'm preparing to make a mixed cd to leave around town.

yesterday i went to the las vegas bowl and watched the osu beavers kick the shiznit out of new mexico. since mike is an osu alumni the whole group of us were dressed in orange, and slightly intoxicated. we also tailgated before the game, drinking beer and eating garden burgers, yum!

i just wanted to tell sarah that she's welcome to come down to vegas anytime for some cuddling.

weirdness for the night

so after sort of watching the football game at gvr, mike and i drove home each in our own car, destined to meet strangeness. mike stops off for gas and while he is fueling up a truck pulls in, the driver cranks the country music, gets out and starts to line dance next to his truck. about 2 minutes later i go to the laundry to put my clothes in the drier, only to see a guy, hunched completely over the handles(think hunchback) on the eliptical trainer, going at about 120rpms(probably at no resistance) when he suddenly straightens up, sticks his tounge out and starts violently shaking his head back and forth(in my mind he was making an ahl-ahl-ahl-ahl-ahl-ahl-ahl-ahl sound while doing it) tounge slapping from side to side in his mouth. all very strange.

espn 16x9

so the last 2 football games on espn here in vegas have been in 16x9 aspect ratio. has this been the case in other parts of the country, or is it just cox cable?

well, i guess we can all quit worrying

so we've caught saddam, i guess we can relax now, no more terrorist attacks. i feel so much better. safe, like i'm in my mothers womb. god bless shrub.

what's that? saddam wasn't involved in 9-11? we still haven't caught the guy that was? wait, and iraq didn't have wmd? next you'll be telling me that the terror threat color level didn't go down to green now that saddam has been caught. wait, you mean orange isn't lower than yellow? well, wtf? i've been lied to! and not just by anybody, but by the president of the united states. i feel so betrayed. next you'll be telling me that dick cheney is in cahoots with haliburton, and the energy companies.

smooth move shrub-lax

so bush's steel tariffs have ended up costing over 200,000 american jobs. more jobs than everyone the steel industry employs in this country. just wait until the retalitory tariffs kick in if bush doesn't remove the steel ones. just a shining example of how the things that the republican party says, which sound really good on the surface are really bad for america.

word to the wise

don't encrypt things using microsoft's encryption unless you know exactly what you are doing, and take all precautions necessary, like backing up your encryption keys. because if you don't, and windows crashes, requiring a reinstall, you are fucked. because microsoft wanted to make encryption seemless to the user, windows handles all the keys, and they are tied to the profile, which will change when you reinstall, resulting in a complete loss of data. of course you can recover the data by using the encryption recovery agent, but that was the administrator account on the system you just reinstalled on, so your still fucked. and since microsoft uses 128bit encryption, you can't even crack the key in a reasonable amount of time(think years and years).

why do i know this? because i had a customer that i had to reinstall windows on their pc, and later discovered that they had encrypted a bunch of files(they didn't even remember that they had done this), which are now dead to them.

so the moral of this story is that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and you should always fully understand the consequences of your actions.

the main question i have is why doesn't microsoft tell the user all these facts when they try to encrypt a file, instead of it just being a check box with no(or little) warning?

wow, there, are, just, way, too, many, out, of, place, comma's, in, this, p,o,s,t,.,
