body knows best
a new study confirms the findings of a 2000 study, that nonoxynol-9 is ineffective in preventing the spread of aids, and may in fact increase the risk of trasmission. i guess my body knew what it was doing in the mid-early nineties when i suddenly became allergic to it. for those of you who aren't allergic, the reaction is a burning sensation that gets stronger the longer the nonoxynol-9 is in contact with your skin, followed by a slight rash(i suppose it might cause more of a rash if i had more stamina, but...). it takes some of the fun out of sex, although not all of it :)
ctrl-alt-del
the inventor of the three finger salute is retiring tomorrow. best quote in the article: "I may have invented it, but Bill made it famous."

invade disney
a good article about the tyranny of copyright in the nytimes(free registration). for those of you who don't know, i'm of the belief that copyrights have gotten too long. it used to be the case that something went from copyrighted to public domain in a quick time, now things created when you are born will not become public domain until you are long dead. who benefits from that except corporations? it almost makes me want to invade companies who are hording copyrights(like disney) and liberate the art contained inside the walls of retroactively extended copyright.
think this is only about art? it turns out that scientific journals own the copyright to all the papers they publish, and are currently charging scientists to view them. now this seemed reasonable when they were providing a service(distributing the information), but now that service is unneeded, but they still maintain control of the research. remember that this is information that they didn't pay to obtain, you paid for most of it through taxes which support the public universities where this research was done, but they are the ones profitting from it(the scientists aren't even making money off of this, so they don't even have the artists share argument that the riaa uses).
and now the departing weapons inspector in iraq says(nytimes free reg) that the weapons were gone before the war. what a shock.
and just cuz it came on as i was typing this, here's some body count lyrics:
I got my twelve gauge sawed off.
I got my headlights turned off.
I'm 'bout to bust some shots off.
I'm 'bout to dust some cops off.
I'm a COP KILLER, better you than me.
COP KILLER, fuck police brutality!
(ok, so it's not copyright, but it is censorship)
but tonight we get even.
linux programs that i use
i am making a list of the programs i use on linux and what they replace in windows/close source world. i am also rating them, but the rating is probably a little skewed since i wouldn't be using them if i didn't like them. maybe i should rate them as compared to the programs they replace. anyhow, it's a work in progress(like many of the programs i use), but here it is

computergate
the republicans have been stealing the democrats internal documents. aren't you glad politicians are so moral? and this from the religious right, moral majority dickheads.
june panic
hey, does ne1(i'm so 733t) have a way to contact june panic? i just want to give him a call and tell him how much i like his music, and how great it is to see good reviews with the words north dakota tacked on the end.
for those of you who don't know, june was the featured guest of coach and 6's first broadcast from the basement of roger's house. if you would like to hear the archive of that show, go to here
so tonight i'm going out to drink, eat, and play craps with the it guy for jimmy buffett. i hope to score some tickets to the show tomorrow, but i don't really expect to get them, but it would be great. i guess i'll just have to satisfy myself with good food, good conversation, good company, and good craps.
on to politics:
so dean can't keep from sticking his foot in his mouth, or screaming "heeyaaahh", or from being smeagol dean instead of golem dean(thank you daily show). kerry looks like skeletor, and lieberman sounds like the dad from alf. what's a liberal to do? or a libertarian(before the conservatives co-opted that term) for that matter.
so i'm up to iggy pop in my quest to ogg my cd's.only 2 more stacks to go. ok, i still have the misc ones that aren't in my stacks to do, but so what.

mars stereo pairs
go here to see stereo(read 3d) images of mars. the parallel images are viewed like those hidden 3d pictures(it's a schooner! it's not a schooner it's a sailboat! a schooner is a sailboat.). somehow space stuff manages to bring the total geek out in me.
